1. One fact that I think I could analyze using the ideological method of criticism is advertisements. I want to work in the radio business and advertisements are a crucial part of radio. All the organizations that sponsor the radio station are usually receive free advertising or companies/ organizations will pay to have advertising. One advertisement in particular that I hear often is for a local tiniting company. This company advertises tinting on automobiles. They explain how well of a job they do and have no physical proof to show, its only voices. They persuade their product by guaranteeing money back but other than that they have no proof or reputation to go by. In return for the radio show advertising for the tinting company they give the show discounts on their products to use as prizes for the listeners. This just guarantees the company more business and gives the radio show incentives.
2. Another artifact that I would consider analyzing is the movie Remember the Titans. I could talk about the problems with race, homosexuality and gender roles. For example I could talk about the signs that the homesexual football player and how contraversal it was during that time to be both.
3. The last fact I would consider analyzing is Broadcasting live from Bar Norfolk. This segment used to air on Friday and Saturday nights live from Bar Norfolk. They are trying to persuade listeners to come in by airing the excitement in the crowd or just making you feel like your part of the excitement. They way they guarantee a good time is not by showing a good time but listening to a good time. How they portray what a good time they are having is by the cheering of the audience.

I think that artifact #3 (Bar Norfolk) would be the easiest to analyze using Pentadic criticism. Since it's on-location it would obviously have a very strong scene and whomever was hosting the show would be a very strong agent. I think it would be interesting to pick one day's show and go through exactly what the elements are and how the radio station and bar are working together.
ReplyDeleteAs far as ideological criticism goes I think the first artifact you mentioned would give way to a great analysis. The company obviously has the ideology that they do a good job and are the best option, it'd be interesting to see exactly what elements they bring up to prove that point.

ReplyDeleteI like the artifact of Bar Norfolk. It is not too broad and can be commented on easily. An important question to ask is, would bringing the party to potential customers through the radio improve the amount of customers or will their tactics give more people incentive to stay home since they can listen to the party on the radio and save money? I would be attracted to the social aspect, the influential broadcasters, and
the live music, so I might show up! Bar Norfolk's persuasion might do what it is supposed to do for the majority of the people. Also, I think there is enough to think about and put into your essay to make it a good one.
