Final Post

I thought the course was good to learn about the different point of views about different pieces of writing. It made me more open minded about learning more depth on how to look at different pieces of work and better understand them.
My favorite part of the class was learning about how to write persuading you teacher to change your grade. It was one of the first classes I took but it was interesting to learn that teachers really look into how their students p
ersuade them.
I would say the hardest thing in this class was learning how to handle writing differently. We learned about different types of writing and they were all hard for me to understand. I know we heard different examples but it was still to hard for me to understand. The book was hard to understand the concepts. The examples were so hard because they were so different from each other.
I would include this experience with learning about mistakes in my life. I think with using this course I could learn more about what common themes in my life adds up to making my mistakes. Just like we learned about in ldealogical critcism. You gather all the themes about the suject and how their related to make the final piece. I would think about learning about this method would better help me rethink my process of thinking in general. This class would help me think through things more clearly.
I think I would use my knowledge about and put it towards the issue of electing my president for a future term. Looking at Obama now I could take what I have learned about his consistent themes in the past. This could better help me understand if I want to continue with him or a new president. It could better help me understand about current events and what works best. For example within this new year I will learn if this new social security thing is effective or not. This idea will help my better make my selection in the future.

Paper 2: Britany Spears music using Ideological criticism

I chose my top on Britney Spears and her music because I thought that she has been in the media constantly. She always has some new type of drama whether is has to deal with her custody with her kids or her trying to make a come back, it's always something new.

I am going to use Ideological criticism. Using this method I am going to analyze her work through her music video's, her live performances and her progression of music.

Hard times- when she shaved her head, and her performance at the 2007 MTV awards.( She looked horrible and did a terrible job)

Progression- Each CD she has come out with she has shown that she is growing up. Example her freshmen album to sophomore she sings "Not yet a women."

Exotic- She continually is trying new things. The infamous three way kiss during the MTV awards and dance moves in her music videos.

Music Video's- Talk about the genre of them. For example talking about her Cirrus tour how she is in the middle of the ring and the spotlight is on her.
Live performances- In 2007 when she performed at the MTV awards she was supposed to be making a come back. Unfortunately she looked horrible she was wearing unflattering clothing, overweight and she really did not dance just walked around the stage even though it was a fast paced song.
Progression of music- Going from her freshmen album were she is portrayed as being very innocent she jumped to being portrayed as a sex symbol. Her next album had words that had the lyric "I'm not that innocent," and she was wearing red and portrayed as the devil and wearing red leather.

Flim Festival Assignment

For the week of the film festival I went and saw "Field of Dreams." This movie was about a man that owned a farm and had voices that told him to build a baseball field on it. Throughout the movie he went through many struggles to actually making this dream become a reality.

A type of criticism that would be good to use was fantasy. You could use his dreams about wanting to watch all the great baseball players play with when he actually got to see the ghost play. You could also use it because he was seeing the great baseball players ghost's playing on his in the process of being built baseball field on his farm. It shows one dream is coming true about watching the ghosts play and that his dream for the baseball field being built on his farm was almost complete and gave him more motivation.

Fantasy-Theme Criticism

Britney Spears
She is a pop singer and a major icon. You can see a lot of the ways she expressed these through her lyrics and her performances on stage and in her music videos.
One example is on her second record the single "Oops!...I did it again." When her first CD had come out she was viewed by the public as an innocent and wholesome teenager. With this song in the music video for the first time she wears sexually suggestive clothing with was out character. In the lyrics she ends the song with "I'm not that innocent," and she was dressed in red with flames in the background. This image was to portray the "devilish" side of her and that she was a changed person not what she used to be.
Another example is in her hit single "Slave 4-U." She is talking about how she felt like a slave to the media and public. In the music video it shows her dressed as a slave and being pulled by people in different directions.
Lastly her most recent tour, and single "Cirrus." This whole album was her come back from all of the horrible things that had happened to her in the past two years. Yet again just like the "Slave 4-U," single takes about her struggle with the media. The music video shows her being the center of a cirrus that is going on. This portrays how she has constantly been put in the spotlight and everything that she does is being watched and judged. It also shows that her life may seem glamours but it's not all the time because she is constantly being watched and told what to do with her life.
The progression of her career has been shown through her albums and it shows how much as a person she was changed and grown from her first image as a wholesome small town girl. She relates her music to what is going on in her life and you can see that through her lyrics and performances.

Bar Norfolk

Bar Norfolk
My artifact was about Z-104 broadcasting live from Bar Norfolk. During these live broadcast you can hear the music and all of the people in the bar. The purpose of the live broadcast is to make the listeners a home to feel like they are part of the party, and get them to visit Bar Norfolk.
The whole idea of this advertisement is to persuade the audience of listeners one way or another. To come join the party, make you feel apart of the good time they're having or to always continually let them be your number one choice.
As much fun and carefree as they make things sound the whole process is not. Both the broadcasting company and the Bar Norfolk have the motive of making money off of this event. The listeners are forced to listen to commercial advertisements, continually hear about Bar Norfolk, and keep you choosing Z-104 to listen to as their first choice. So with all of that it is kind of strange how something can be appear to be carefree and fun but really it is all about making money.
All of advertising are complete hidden messages. I went online and found that Bar Norfolk and Z-104 have a deal where they mutually advertise for themselves. Since they both make enough money from using each other. Meaning that Z-104 broadcast for free from Bar Norfolk.

Ideology

Ideology is the way of describing daily life. When someone talks about ideology it refers to when some one talks about how they can relate to the world and how they perceive on how the way some holds a conversation.
The procedures are selecting an artifact, analyzing the artifact, formulating a research question and writing an essay. This is a break down step by step process on how to fully analyze an idea and write about it. The essay portion is about the artifact making connections and is the final procedure that combines all the steps. For example in the essay you would take major themes that occur in the artifact. After selecting the major themes you would list examples of when that happens thouroughout the artifact to prove your point.

Three Artifacts

1. One fact that I think I could analyze using the ideological method of criticism is advertisements. I want to work in the radio business and advertisements are a crucial part of radio. All the organizations that sponsor the radio station are usually receive free advertising or companies/ organizations will pay to have advertising. One advertisement in particular that I hear often is for a local tiniting company. This company advertises tinting on automobiles. They explain how well of a job they do and have no physical proof to show, its only voices. They persuade their product by guaranteeing money back but other than that they have no proof or reputation to go by. In return for the radio show advertising for the tinting company they give the show discounts on their products to use as prizes for the listeners. This just guarantees the company more business and gives the radio show incentives.

2. Another artifact that I would consider analyzing is the movie Remember the Titans. I could talk about the problems with race, homosexuality and gender roles. For example I could talk about the signs that the homesexual football player and how contraversal it was during that time to be both.

3. The last fact I would consider analyzing is Broadcasting live from Bar Norfolk. This segment used to air on Friday and Saturday nights live from Bar Norfolk. They are trying to persuade listeners to come in by airing the excitement in the crowd or just making you feel like your part of the excitement. They way they guarantee a good time is not by showing a good time but listening to a good time. How they portray what a good time they are having is by the cheering of the audience.

How does the textbook define "neo-Aristotelian criticism?"

The book defines neo-Aristotelian criticism as "the first formal method of rhetorical criticism." It originally had no structure and guidelines but with time this method developed the framework for how a speech should be formed, organized and presented. This was done by contributions from various people throughout time that decided what criteria needed to be met.
I can understand why it took so long on how to define this type of criticism because rhetorical criticism is a confusing concept as it is. It seems that even though the communication field has come a long way all aspects and concepts of it are still very vague. I feel like as confusing as they try to make neo-Aristotelian criticism if you really take a long at it, it's common sense and a guide on how to be organized.

What are the 5 cannons of rhetoric?

The book I believe had the best way in describing what applying the cannons is "the steps that go into the process of public speaking." The five steps are invention, organization, style, memory and the delivery.
This process seems like common sense of how you would organize a speech starting with the way you formulate your ideas for a speech which includes background information, objects and giving a taste of what you point is. The second step is organizing your speech which is self explanatory, it's preparing your speech on what your going to talk about. It's done through the order you plan to talk about everything. The third step is style. It's all about what your own personal twist your applying to your speech. I'm not sure if this is accurate but I interpreted it as the game plan for your method of persuasion you plan on using. Fourth is the memory where you show how well you have mastered the subject by proving it. The audience is going to be the people that tell whether you actually know what your talking about because your trying to teach them, they are learning from the presenter. If the audience does not have a good grasp on the message of the speaker then the speaker looks like they do not know what they are talking about. Lastly the delivery is how you finally present your speech to your audience. This idea can be tested by how you have influenced your audience by measuring their reaction. In my opinion I think the final step is the most important the delivery is what wins the audiences over. If you don't know what your talking it will show through your delivery. If the speaker seems excited and interested in what they're talk about that will make the audience motivated to understand as well.

What are the three basic steps in analyzing an artifact?

1. SELECTING THE ARTIFACT
The first step would be selecting the artifact. This entails you find a piece of work that meets the appropriate standards in selecting your artifact. The artifact you chose must me something that you are interested in. The reason why is because selecting something that you are motivated about will make sure you have the right tools available in doing your best at analyzing your artifact to the fullest. The last standard would be to select an artifact that is by a rhetor so that it is easy to access background information about the.

2. ANALYZING THE ARTIFACT
Secondly Analyzing the artifact which includes three major steps reconstructing the context in which the artifact occurred, application of the five canons to the artifact and assessing the impact of the artifact on the audience.
The first step would be investigating about the rhetor's background information. This helps you get a better feel for what the rhetor's point of views are and why he was motivated about this subject. The best I thought to describe this idea was it is putting you in the rhetor's shoes.
The second step is applying the five canons to the artifact. The best way I thought to describe this process would be organizing a public speech. The basic steps even end with what the audiences memory of the speech and what they got out of the presentation.
The final step is having the critic judges the actually rhetoric by trying to interpret what the goal of the rhetoric. They do this by analyzing a response.

3. WRITING THE ESSAY
The final step is putting all your information from your previous steps and actually writing the essay. It is a five step process that is the basic writing structure for writing any essay. It includes the introduction, the description of the artifact and its context, a description of the method of criticism,a report of the findings of the analysis and finally a discussion of the contribution the analysis makes to rhetorical theory.

Introduction.

I'm Courtney Brown a junior and a communications major. I want to take out of using this blog is to better understand rhetorical criticism through interacting with other students from the course textbook. Hopefully with this blog it will have guide me to a better understanding of rhetorical criticism as a whole.
